Are you with the love of your life but are still unhappy in your relationship?
While building good communication skills and problem solving are important, there’s more to building a meaningful relationship. I have found that, initially a thorough assessment of the relationship has to take place.
I challenge couples to journey back to their families of origin and recall and assess what they learned from their parents and families regarding love, forgiveness, commitment, relationships, being a man/husband, and a woman/wife.
With this assessment, together we can determine both healthy and unhealthy behaviors, thoughts, and attitudes that influence the relationship. Because our norms are determined by what we most experience, we cannot establish new healthy norms and ways of relating until our past negative influences are identified. With these patterns understood, then we can build more effective communication and problem solving skills.
